What type of woman should freeze her eggs Apple and Facebook announced that the companies will pay for female employees to freeze their eggs. It’s a great company policy. For one thing, it’s acknowledgment that the gap between women and men in the workplace is that women’s careers are controlled by their biological clock and men’s are not. Another thing this new policy does is it gives women more reproductive choices. Similar to the pill, really. So it should be no surprise that like the pill, egg freezing faces widespread wariness. As if perfectly timed for the news, Jonathan Eig  just published a book titled, The Birth of the Pill. When the pill emerged, it  spawned a whole industry of people saying that women should not have reproductive choices because women would make bad choices. (Sluts! Hussies! Adultery!) Today, people are worried women will wait too long or women have bad priorities. (And of course theres great commentary from The Onion as well.) I don’t see how anyone can complain about  women getting more reproductive choices and companies paying for it. Paying for egg freezing seems very similar to me to paying for kids to come eat dinner at the office. Both  programs strive to keep people at work, putting career before family. There have been programs in place for a long time to keep men from going home to kids. So why is it surprising that now there are programs tailored to keep women from going home to kids? Look, if you really want to spend time with your kids then you can just decline to take advantage of the programs. And if you’re so upset that parents in Silicon Valley are never home, well, at least you can console yourself with the fact that slews of those same parents are homeschooling their kids  and most of you are not, so different kids get different benefits from their surroundings. So this all begs the question: Who should take advantage of the new policy of corporate-sponsored egg freezing? Do you ever wish on a star? I do. I think about what is the most important thing to me. I never cheatI don’t wish for ten wishes. And I don’t use conjunctions to string wishes together. I don’t wish for superpowers or anything I think would be unachievable, pie-in-the-sky. If you try this, you will end up figuring out, each night, what is most important in your life. I discovered that I want to see my kids grow up and find their own paths. I want to see how they turn out. More than anything. This should not surprise me because when I was at the World Trade Center, and it fell, and I couldn’t see and couldn’t breathe, time slowed down. To the point of almost stopping. What I now know to be only  about one  minute feels, in my memory, like five or ten minutes. I stood still  and thought: This is it it. Now I will die. And I was  had a sort of  peaceful feeling. I thought: I have heard asphyxiation is very painful. I hope this is not painful. Then I thought: I was so looking forward to watching my life unfold. I’m so disappointed to not see my brothers grow into adults. I’m so disappointed to not watch my marriage unfold into a family. That’s all: disappointment about not getting to watch family grow and make choices. I had a big career. I never felt sad that I would not do any more of my big job. We don’t know the meaning of life, but we know that relationships matter more than anything, and watching them unfold is the most enjoyable part of life: Watching people make decisions and be themselves and connect themselves to us. This is all what life is about. Here are bad reasons to freeze your eggs: 1. You want more time  to find a career Look, if you don’t have a career by age 30 you probably dont  really want to have one. People who love working and are fulfilled by working find something that suits them by the time they are 30 because they work on finding it all through their 20s. People who travel, do art projects, go to mental wards, move in with questionable significant othersthese are people who are fulfilled by other things besides work. They should just admit it and not keep asking for more time to be something they are not. They are only putting their real lives on hold to live out the life they wish they needed. 2. You want to  get more done in your current career There is no time when you can have a baby and it won’t ruin your work life. And there is no time when women who have stellar careers are excited about putting the career in the tanker to have a baby. It’s discouraging, of course, to have to slow down a steep upward slope because of a biological clock. But the timing only gets worse as you get further and further into your career. If you are not willing to interrupt your career before you’re 35, why would you interrupt your career after 35? 3. You might want babies in the future We don’t get a lot of guarantees in life. We don’t get promises about having enough money, or marrying someone honest, but we do get to make choices. So we need to make them. The world divides between people who like to make decisions and people who don’t like to make decisions (Find out which type you are here). The people who dont like commitment  are the ones most likely to put off having a baby. But ironically, those are the same types of people who don’t generally need to protect their career carefully. Careers of fluid thinkers who don’t like closure are not generally huge or linear, which means that taking time off for kids will not derail the career. And this means that there is no reason to put off having kids. It’s just a ploy to put off making the decision, but making decisions is what defines our lives. 4. You don’t have a partner Women do not have partners by age 30 because they don’t make finding a partner a priority. It’s not a mystery how people find partners: they look. Consistently. With focus. It’s difficult to meet your match in adult life. No one gets a good career without focus, and drive, and making decisions based on incomplete information. And the same is true for a spouse: you can’t get a spouse unless you use focus and drive and make decisions on incomplete information. I read advice from marriage counselor Kelly Flanagan that really crystalized for me why we have life partners. To be alive is to be lonely. Its the human condition. Marriage doesnt change the human condition. It cant make us completely unlonely. And when it doesnt, we blame our partner for doing something wrong, or we go searching for companionship elsewhere.  Marriage is intended to be a place where two humans share the experience of loneliness  and, in the sharing, create moments in which the loneliness dissipates. For a little while. Most people are partnered-up by their 30s which makes plain the loneliness people in their 30s feel without a partner. So  avoid thatfocus on finding a partner, and focus before age 30 instead of after, and you’ll open more opportunities for yourself. So who should freeze their eggs?   Probably no one. It just delays the inevitable. You will disrupt your career, you will hate the transition to parenthood, you will feel out of control, and you will have the brunt of household care. You will never have enough money for your kids because no one does. And you will never have enough time for them, either. Freezing eggs doesn’t make any of that better. But having a baby by the time you’re 35 means you’ll get to see the child in adult life. And I can tell you with assurance that for me, that’s a huge part of why being alive feels so exciting and full of promise. I want to see how my kids’ lives unfold. Freezing eggs does not change one thing in your life. It just delays it. The whole truth is that while I don’t see a huge benefit to freezing  eggs, I also don’t see a huge benefit to  people with kids  eating  free dinners at their workplace. Our first job is family and our second job is work, but kids can’t speak up like your workplace can. So you have to be a balanced voice for both.

How to turn down a job offer A reader asked this question: Would you mind writing a post about dealing with multiple job offers and declining some of them politely and gracefully? This is actually a question about networking. When someone offers you a job, they have identified you as someone they want to be connected with. That you have multiple offers for this type of connection makes you even more desirable. So when you turn down the offer, your number-one concern should be making sure this person stays in your network. This means that you should remember networking tips that would apply to any situation. And, before I get to them, I want to tell you that Tahl Razs article in Inc. magazine about Keith Ferrazzi is one of my all-time favorite things to read about networking, and it applies to you no matter what your situation is. But here are four things to keep in mind for turning down an offer: 1. Be nice. When you turn down a job, thank the person for the opportunity. Tell the person that something about them or their company impressed you. Think of something, even if its small. Just make sure you are specific, because thats the type of compliments that matter most to people. Then explain why the job you are taking is a great opportunity for you. Dont explain why the other company is a thousand times better than the company youre rejecting, even if it is. Talk in terms of the opportunity, and how it will allow you make a big difference to the business and grow personally. The aim is to show that what matters to you is learning and contributing to the organization because thats what you want the person to remember about you. 2. Follow up. Do something a week or so later to let the person know you plan to keep in touch. This will make the person feel more like you rejected the job offer and not him, personally. There are a lot of ways to follow up. You can comment on their blog, if they have one. Send them information you find that you know theyll like. Or you can invite the person to lunch if you want to spend time together. Or, if time together makes you cringe, take a smaller step and send a LinkedIn invitation. (Introduction to LinkedIn. Advanced LinkedIn.) 3. Suggest someone else. If you are someone who is specialized, and its going to be hard for the employer to find someone like you, you can really endear yourself by referring a friend. Even if the friend doesnt ultimately take the job, Ian Ybarra points out that introducing someone to someone else is a gift (list item #6). 4. Assess your own conduct. Of course, none of this will work if you have been being very difficult and demanding during the interview process and stringing someone along for months and are dropping the ball at the last possible minute. In this case, you might think about how your slow and perhaps-incompetent decision-making process is giving you a bad reputation. Its hard to turn down a job offer in this situation without looking like a jerk. So if you have already gotten yourself in a muddle, turning down the job offer will be tough. Face the muddle and help yourself to not do that again. And if you are not in a muddle, congratulations on the multiple job offers!

I hope this article will ease you into a positive mindset so you take control of your process.If you don’t want to give it a go, that’s your prerogative and there is little reason to keep reading this article.Its tough to find a job for everyone, not just those over 50To be really honest, it’s tough not only for the over 50’s but for all job seekers. It’s all a matter of attitude and determination and, never giving up! One of my clients in his early 40’s experienced great challenges securing a new role because of his seniority and also because of the limited opp ortunities in Sydney at that point in time.In order to uncover more opportunities he had to open up his search to other cities and overseas. He became open to the idea of relocating. He found that the executive search firm consultants were of the opinion that it was a ‘tough market out there’ as they, too, were struggling to find suitable roles for him.He took matters into his own hands rather than using the common job search methods. He has now moved to Singapore having secured a role at the level he was seeking in the industry of his choice.Typical job search methods are to register with recruiters and to send out dozens upon dozens of resumes to get a job. That used to work when it was an employees’ market. Many of my clients have told me that it used to be so easy for them to get a job ‘back in the day’ however things have changed.Even though it may be a challenging job market right now, companies are still hiring. They’re just not hiring as freely as they seemed to years ago. There is a natural attrition rate within organisations. Those roles need to be filled â€" sometimes by internal candidates, sometimes by external candidates.You must do what is most effective to be the external candidate who is the Chosen One. So, how can you do that?What is the Hiring Manager looking for?Consider what the hiring manager needs. His own job security may depend on his people making him look good. He’ll want to find a new team member who will make a significant contribution and fit in.This makes hiring a very personal matter. Therefore he might not want to leave it to the Human Resources Department to short-list the few people they believe would be the dream candidates. Also, he may prefer not to outsource the process to a recruiter and incur a hefty recruitment cost.Doing the hard yards himself by placing the perfect job ad and screening online resumes is terribly time consuming.So what is the hiring manager, to do? Unless it’s against company policy, h e turns to people he already knows and trusts and asks for recommendations. His network very likely will understand the type of person who’ll be a good fit.The single most important thing to understand about job search is that people hire people they know will be a good fit.LinkedIn is where you must be so make your profile a good oneThere’s another option open to hiring managers. LinkedIn. LinkedIn has made it so easy for anyone to do a key word search to find candidates that match their requirements. They can choose the functional capabilities required, the industry, location and even filter current or past companies to find a suitable candidate with the right experience.LinkedIn will create a list of candidates matching the required criteria, saving a lot of time. In fact, a recent JobVite survey found that 93% of recruiters use LinkedIn to source for candidates.What does this tell you? To get a foot in the door, a getting a recommendation or to be easily found via LinkedIn will be your best bet in the current job market.Get out there and NetworkFocus on meeting and getting to know decision-makersThe most productive activities for any job seekers are those that lead to creating relationships with potential hiring managers. You also need to create relationships with people whom the decision-makers know and trust (their sphere of influence).Have some fun with it and become a job search detective. Research the companies where you’d like to work. Identify the decision-makers, and figure out how you might meet them.If you have no connections who may be able to introduce you, attend events where those decision makers might be. Attend conferences and networking events. Turn up and create your own serendipity.I encouraged one of my clients who lived a long way south of Sydney to attend his local chamber of commerce meetings when he told me he had a limited network. He made a number of new connections at the first two meetings he attended and also made 2 exce llent connections with hiring managers who, by chance, were looking to expand their teams.As he’d crafted a strong positioning statement, or ‘pitch’, he was able to articulate with ease his relevant areas of expertise. This eventually led to 2 job offers. Those roles never made it on to the online job boards. His networking efforts uncovered two ‘hidden’ jobsOf course it’s much less confronting to stay in front of the computer and just click ‘Apply’ and send your resume into cyberspace. However, if that is not yielding the desired results, do something different.Give yourself a chance for success by expanding your connections and developing those relationships. Allow people to find you with ease by creating a powerful LinkedIn profile featuring all of the relevant key words that will help you to turn up in a relevant search.Develop resilience. Of course you will expose yourself to rejection, perhaps many times before you land the job you want. Keep at it. Frequently it’s a case of: no, no, no, no, no, no, then YES!A reality checkAre you qualified for what you want to do? Do you have the relevant experience? Do you understand the latest relevant technology and methodology? Do you present yourself as the most up to date and informed professional? Are you willing to learn? Are you open to new ideas? Are you adaptable during changing circumstances? Are you willing to learn from those younger than you?If you can answer, ‘Yes’ to all of the above then you are giving yourself the best possible chance for success to find a job if youre over 50.Another optionIf, despite it all, you don’t secure a new role as an employee, consider other options. Leverage your skills, knowledge and resourcefulness by considering self-employment.There are several options to consider: Consulting, Buying a Business, Buying a Franchise or setting up your own Business. Whats Your Dream

Whats Your Dream I am sure you have either seen or heard of Susan Boyle by now.   It is worth watching her again. Susans dream is to become a famous singer.   She is now 47 years old and has been singing since she was 12.   Right now we can only speculate what series of events led to her to compete in Britains Got Talent. Could it be her dream was always to become a famous singer? Did she listen to the naysayers who said she couldnt, wouldnt, shouldnt? Shes unemployed.  Did she reach the point of re-invention by crisis?   When we have lost things that are dear to us, sometimes we are forced to re-evaluate who we are.   Who are you?   If you were to lose everything, what would you have left? It seems to me that Susan has always loved singing.   It has been a part of her life since she was 12.   I would love to know what motivated her to compete.   Certainly there were other opportunities in her life to sing in public. Each one of us has incredible, inspiring talents, just like Sharon.   If we can follow our dreams, take a chance and do what we need to do to be found, ours could be the next Susan Boyle story. Dream! Thank you Susan for the inspiration and the valuable lessons we all took away from watching you!
